Description

Raspberry Beret by Prince has so many great sounds for pronunciation practice. The title alone has the consonant sounds /r/, /z/, and /b/ and the BLACK, RED, GREEN, MUSTARD, and GRAY vowel sounds!

Can you hear each of the listed sounds in the words RASPBERRY BERET?

Keep in mind that the P in RASPBERRY and the T in BERET are silent. The letter S in RASPBERRY has the /z/ sound. The letter E - which appears once in RASPBERRY and twice in BERET, has a different color vowel sound each time it appears: RED, MUSTARD, and GRAY. Here's an alternate spelling to help with the pronunciation of these words: raazbehree buhray.

Pronunciation tips for each of these sounds:

/r/: for this sound, the tongue is pulled back with the tip relaxed. The sides of the tongue press against the insides of the back teeth. Be sure the tongue tip does NOT touch the roof of the mouth. If the tongue tip is raised, an /l/ sound will be produced.

/æ/ as in BLACK: the mouth is open and the lips are NOT rounded. The edges of the mouth pull slightly to the sides making more of a rectangular shape. The tongue is flat on the floor of the mouth.

/z/: the sides of the tongue touch the middle and back upper teeth while the tip of the tongue is lowered a bit. Air flows out the middle part of the tongue. The /z/ sound is voiced (meaning the vocal cords are active) and sounds buzzy.

/b/: a voiced sound - meaning the vocal cords vibrate when producing this sound. The lips are fully together and then part quickly to produce a small release of air.

/ɛ/ as in RED: the tongue is relaxed in the mid-high position. The lips are farther apart than they are for the /ei/ GRAY sound.

/i/ as in GREEN: the lips are slightly smiling, tense, and not rounded. The tongue is tense, high, and the sides of the tongue touch the inside of the back teeth.

/ə/ as in MUSTARD: known as the schwa, it is the most common vowel sound in spoken English. It is a quick, relaxed neutral vowel sound. It sounds like UH.

/eɪ/ as in GRAY: a diphthong - or moving- sound - made up of two different target mouth positions and sounds. When making the GRAY vowel sound the lips are relaxed, not rounded and the mouth is slightly open. The tongue moves from a mid-high to high position as the jaw moves up.
